Festival Dates & Key Highlights
Festival Duration: February 14, 2027 – February 23, 2027

Main Pongala Day: Monday, February 22, 2027

Location: Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, Thiruvananthapuram

The Sacred Tradition Behind the Fire

The festival centers around the presiding deity, Attukal Bhagavathy, who is revered as an incarnation of Kannaki, the legendary heroine of the Tamil epic Silappadikaram. Devotees gather to honor her strength, grace, and divine protection.

The word Pongala translates to “to boil over”. On the ninth day of the festival, millions of female devotees line the streets spanning a radius of over seven kilometers around the temple. Armed with small earthen pots, brick stoves, rice, jaggery, coconut, and firewood, they prepare a sweet offering called Payasam. The ritual begins when the sacred hearth (Pandara Aduppu) inside the temple is lit by the chief priest, setting off a chain reaction as thousands of hearths flicker to life across the city streets.

Navigating Transportation: Roads close to motor vehicle traffic within 5 to 7 kilometers of the temple on Pongala day. Plan to walk or use public transit routes.

What to Wear: Modest, light cotton clothing is essential.
