Discover Indi: Karnataka’s Famous ‘Land of Lemons’

Nestled in Karnataka’s Vijayapura district, the town of Indi has earned a reputation as the “Land of Lemons.” Known primarily for producing the celebrated Kagzi lemon—often called Indi Lime—the region has been cultivating this prized citrus crop across the Indi and Sindagi taluks since the early 20th century. Today, Vijayapura serves as the state’s citrus powerhouse, contributing nearly 58% of Karnataka’s total lime production. To protect its heritage and unique cultural link, Indi Lime was awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2023.

What Makes Indi’s Kagzi Lemon Special?

The name Kagzi stems from the word for paper, directly referencing the fruit’s paper-thin peel. Beyond its delicate rind, this local variety offers distinct traits that make it a favorite among growers and chefs alike:

  • Punchy Flavor Profile: Features intense acidity coupled with a vibrant citrus fragrance.
  • Nutritional Powerhouse: Recognized by agricultural institutions (including ICAR) for its larger size and elevated Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) levels.
  • High Juice Yield: Packed with an abundance of sharp, refreshing juice.1
  • Culinary Essential: Perfect for dressings, marinades, beverages, and traditional dishes where a clean, bold citrus accent is needed.
