Chilanthi Ambalam, a sanctuary dedicated to the sacred spider
The Palliyara Sree Bhagavathy Temple, affectionately known to its devotees as Chilanthi Ambalam (the sanctuary dedicated to the sacred spider), serves as a revered place of worship for those afflicted by spider venom or toxins. Situated approximately 10 kilometers from Adoor and 11 kilometers from Pathanamthitta, this temple is nestled within the Sakthibhadra Samskarika Kendram Complex. It is unique in India, drawing numerous pilgrims from various regions seeking divine healing.
Kodumon, located in Pathanamthitta district, is also the birthplace of Sree Sakthibhadra, celebrated for his renowned Sanskrit play, “Ascharya Choodamani.” The Sakthibhadra Samskarika Kendram in Kodumon aims to honor Sakthibhadra with a fitting memorial. In the 9th century AD, Sakthibhadra was a pioneering Sanskrit scholar in South India, and “Ascharya Choodamani” was one of the earliest significant Sanskrit dramas produced in the region.
The temple’s annual festival is held on the Karthika asterism day in the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam (November/December).
