Dasara Festival of Mysore

Dasara, a vibrant 10-day festival celebrated in Karnataka, culminates on Vijayadashami, the tenth day, symbolizing triumph and prosperity. This festive period honors the divine feminine through the worship of three goddesses: Saraswathi on the sixth day, Durga on the eighth, and Lakshmi on the ninth. Each goddess embodies different aspects of power, knowledge, and wealth, culminating in the grand celebrations of Vijayadashami.

In Karnataka, Dasara is recognized as the state festival, known as Nadahabba, with deep roots in the Mysore Royal Family’s traditions. The royal family conducts special rituals, underscoring the festival’s historical significance. Mysore transforms into a spectacle of lights and colors, with the Palace and significant landmarks illuminated in a dazzling display.

Cultural events abound during this time, featuring performances by renowned artists, along with activities such as sports competitions, wrestling matches, poetry readings, and food and film festivals. The Doddakere Maidana hosts a Dasara Exhibition, showcasing innovations from various sectors and encouraging local businesses.

Mysore is a magnet for tourists during Dasara, particularly drawn by the stunning illumination of the Mysore Palace. The city invests heavily in maintaining these light displays, replacing thousands of bulbs annually.
